Recognizing Community-Engaged Scholarship in Academic Personnel Review

Community-engaged scholarship is an important way to fulfill the public mission of the university and facilitate social innovation. Yet, as more faculty have embraced community engagement in their research and teaching, university cultures and structures for evaluation have not changed, creating impediments and disincentives for community-engaged scholarly work. This webinar will feature leaders at UCLA who are working to advance the recognition of engaged scholarship in promotion and tenure, and how they envision Collaboratory might be used a vehicle for faculty to represent their engaged work. Discussion will focus on how UCLA is:

– Drawing from models and practices for recognizing and evaluating engaged scholarship from peer universities,
– Centering faculty voices,
– Defining engaged scholarship, and
– Building the case for both university-level recognition of engaged scholarship and decentralized criteria for the evaluation of engaged scholarship in academic personnel review

Presenters include:
– Dr. Shalom Staub – Director, Center for Community Engagement, UCLA
– Dr. Bemmy Maharramli, Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives, Center for Community Engagement, UCLA

The event is finished.
